The physiology of many terrestrial monitor lizards is optimized for spending long amounts of time underground. The savannah monitor lizard is such a species. When we house them in ways that prohibit burrowing, such as when aspen shavings, newspaper of other "snake bedding" are used, the lizards undergo a terrible transformation, they become listless, lethargic blobs that many people mistake for being tame.
